Claude Viallat

Claude Viallat (born 1936) is a French contemporary painter.

He was appointed as a teacher in the École des Arts Décoratifs (Decorative Arts School) of Nice in 1964 and decided to create a new formal language questioning the conventions of classical painting.

He then started working systematically with one shape affixed on canvas without stretchers. His first personal exhibition took place at Nice’s Galerie A in 1966. He also participated in several collective exhibitions that year.

Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and reacting against the naturalism of classical painting, Claude Viallat developed a new formal language in his paintings. A rectangular shape with rounded corners, in a variety of colors, recurs throughout his work.

He layers this shape over changing patterns, creating quilt-like paintings—the simplicity and repetitiveness of his works belie the complexity of his subtle shifts in size, format, and contrast.

클로드 비알라 Claude Viallat (1936년생)는 프랑스의 현대작가다.

그는 남프랑스에 있는 님므와 파리 국립미술학교를 졸업하고 1964년 니스의 장식미술학교 교사로 임명되었고 말년에는 님므 국립미술학교의 교수로 작가이자 교육자로써 후학 양성에 힘썼다.

비알라는 고전 회화의 전통에 의문을 제기하면서 자신만의 새로운 조형 언어를 만들기로 결심했다. 그는 캔버스의 지지대 즉 프레임이 없이 펼쳐진 캔버스 위에 작업을 하는 한 가지의 독특한 작품제작방식으로 작업을 했다. 그의 첫 개인전은 1966년에 니스의 갤러리 A에서 열렸으며 이후 수많은 전시를 통해 입지를 구축했다.

70년대 프랑스의 새로운 미술운동이었던 쉬포르/쉬르파스 Support / Surface 의 대표주자로 비알라는 정형화된 패턴을 반복적으로 변화시킴으로서 자신만의 양식을 구축한 화가이다.

다양한 색상으로 마치 누에고치 모양의 정형화된 패턴의 반복과 병렬배치를 통해 공간의 확장성을 끈임없이 모색하는 그의 작업은 서구회화의 전통으로부터 탈정형화를 외치는 70년대 회화운동의 중심에 서 있다.
