베르나르 브네(1941~)는 프랑스 태생의 개념미술가이자 조각가이다. 그의 예술은 조각뿐만 아니라 회화, 디자인, 가구, 건축 등 창작의 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 광범위하게 펼쳐져 있다.

개념미술가로 1960년대 뉴욕에서 작가활동을 시작한 그는 과학과 수학을 접목한 개념미술조각으로 명성을 얻은 작가이다. 특히 수학적 도형과 공식을 응용하여 선을 강조한 미니멀조각 « 라인 Lines », « 아치 Arcs» 시리즈는 브네 작업의 일관성을 보여주는 대표작으로 전세계에 공공조각으로 널리 설치되어 있다. 2011년 베르사이유 궁 올해의 작가로 초대 전시한 20미터의 아치작품, 2019년 벨기에 고속도로에 설치된 60미터 초대형아치 작품은 수학적 계산이 바탕이 된 기념비적 조각에 대한 작가의 창작욕을 보여주는 대표작이다.

본 전시는 매년 전세계를 누비며 왕성한 활동을 해온 베르나르 브네의 올해 첫 개인전이다. 국립현대미술관과 서울시립미술관, 부산시립미술관 등지에서 열린 개인전과 국공립미술관 및 다수의 개인소장을 통해 국내에 널리 알려진 작가의 최신작 « 앵글 Angles » 작업을 조각과 드로잉으로 구성하여 국내 처음으로 공개하는 전시다. 창작의 개념적 접근과 해석으로 수학적 도형을 응용한 « 앵글 »시리즈는 1960년대에 평면작업으로 시작되었다. 작가의 주관적 개입을 최소화하면서 작품의 객관성을 강조한 개념적이며 미니멀적 작업으로 2015년부터 입체조각으로 발전시켰다. « 앵글 » 시리즈는 두개의 선이 만나는 각(angle)을 통해 베르나르 브네 작업의 모토를 이루는 선Line의 역동성과 독립성을 보여주는 작업이다.

Bernar Venet is a French conceptual artist best known for his versatility in multiple mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, as well as furniture design and architecture. Venet became well known in the 1960s for creating abstract pieces that make reference to the language of mathematical concepts and scientific theories, transposing them into the realm of Art. Among the best known are his torch-cut steel plates and beams resembling scribbles, lines, and arcs. On top of numerous solo and group exhibitions, public and private commissions, he has exhibited 20-meter tall, massive steel arcs at the Château de Versailles, France in 2011, and L’Arc Majeur, which is a 60-meter tall and Europe’s largest sculpture on a Belgian Highway.

Bernar Venet first gained recognition in the 1960s for the development of his Tar paintings, Cardboard Reliefs, and his iconic Tas de charbon (Pile of Coal), the first sculpture without a specific shape. The year 1979 marked a significant turning point in Venet’s career: having recently begun a series of wood reliefs–Arcs, Angles, and Straight Lines–he created the first of his Indeterminate Lines and was awarded a grant by the National Endowment for the Arts. From 2015, Bernar Venet developed his work on "Angles". The "Angles" series is a work that shows the dynamics and independence of the lines that form the motto of Bernar Venet's work through the angle where two lines meet.

Gallery 508 is proud to present Bernar Venet’s first exhibition in 2020. Highlight of the exhibition is the selection of sculptures and drawings from Venet’s new series of Angles that have been represented in a number of notable collections such as National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, and Busan Museum of Art.
