Pol Bury (1922-2005) is a Belgian-born painter and sculptor.

After attending the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Mons, Belgium, he began his career as a Surrealist painter heavily influenced by the work of Yves Tanggi and Rene Magritte from 1939 through 1948. After turning to geometric abstraction and associating with the CoBra Group, an avant-garde movement that espoused the complete freedom of color and form in Europe, focus of Bury’s art shifted to sculpture in 1953 after he discovered Alexander Calder’s mobile work in 1950. The movement of Calder’s mobiles captivated Bury, and he began producing sculptures with moving components.

Bury established himself as a pioneer in kinetic art by implementing a moving sculpture using an electric motor and materials such as stainless and Cor-Ten steel, polished brass, and copper.  The characteristic of his early day sculpture is that the concept of time and space was reflected through slow motion by arranging geometric shapes such as a sphere, cube, and cylinder. Given his work reveals a subtle sense of movement that the audience cannot detect without careful observation for a certain period of time, Bury earned his nickname as "The Master of Slowness".

Over the course of his career, Bury created a number of fountains that incorporated water into kinetic movements. His fountain works are widely installed around the world, including the French Mag Foundation Museum, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the 88 Olympic Park in Seoul.

Gallery 508 is honored to exhibit carefully selected lithography art work by Pol Bury. Bury’s lithography with color applied to the three-dimensional composition of sculpture is evaluated as a work that shows a sense of space using colors that sculpture cannot realize. As the title of the work shows, various colors and textures are implemented in depth using geometric figures such as straight lines, curves, circles, and squares. His lithography work shows the artistic talent of Pol Bury, who was a surrealist painter, an abstract artist, and established himself in the history of Western art as a pioneer of kinetic art.
