박제성의 작품은 창작의 전통방식이나 행위와는 다른 인공지능이라는 최첨단 기술을 이용하여 창작의 주체로서 예술가와 인공지능(AI)의 공동작업의 결과물이란 점에서 그 독창성이 있다.

이 전시는 기억색과 조각시라는 작가의 내면적 사고로써 시적 언어를 인공지능이 어떻게 해석하고 그에 걸 맞는 이미지를 만들어내는가에 대한 협업의 창작물을 보여주는 동시에 우리 삶에 다양한 편의를 제공하고 있는 인공지능 기술이 예술창작에 도입할 때 어떻게 작용하고 또 활용될수 있는가에 관한 실험적 작업이다.

기억색 시리즈에서 작가가 먼저 추상적 그림을 그린 다음, 이에 대한 감정을 언어로 표현하기위해 시를 쓴다. 작가의 초벌 그림에 AI 이미지 생성 모델이 저장된 기억을 이용해 작가가 쓴 시의 의미를 해석하여 새로운 이미지를 만들어낸다. 작가와 인공지능의 협업으로 예술작품이 탄생하게 되는 과정이다. 이 작업은 현재 인간이 인공지능을 대하는 방법과 맞닿아 있어 인류가 인공지능과 함께 만들어 나갈 미래, 공진화에 대한 질문으로 이어진다.

조각시는 작가가 지은 시를 AI가 이미지화하고 여기에 채색을 더하는 작업이다. 이 과정은 타인의 기억을 나의 기억으로 만드는 과정이자 생명을 잃은 기억을 살아있는 기억으로 소생시키는 의식이기도 하다. 작가는 수많은 데이터와 개인의 관계에 대해 고민하고 AI와의 공동작업 과정에서의 다양한 관계 설정을 통해 이에 대한 질문을 구체화한다. 이는 개인의 데이터, 즉, 나의 기억의 주인은 과연 나 자신인가 하는 근본적인 질문으로 돌아온다.

본 전시는 동시대미술의 새로운 영역을 개척해 나가는 작가 박제성의 신작을 선보이는 전시로 근래 화두로 떠오른 인공지능과 예술창작의 접목을 통해 창작의 주체성과 미래예술의 방향성에 대한 물음을 주제로 하고 있다.

작가 박제성은 서울대학교 미대를 졸업하고 영국 런던의 왕립미술학교(RCA)에서 석사학위를 받았다. 서울과 런던에서 다수의 개인전을 열었고, 사치갤러리의 코리안 아이, SeMA 미디어시티 비엔날레, Arts Electronica 전시에 참여하면서 미디어예술가로서 입지를 다져왔다. 2010년 중앙미술대전대상, 2016년 VH 어워드 그랑프리 등을 수상했다. 현재 서울대학교 조소과 교수로 재직하며 작품

활동을 하고 있다.

The originality of Je Baak’s work lies in that it is a result of collaboration between the artist and the AI as the subjects of creation, using cutting-edge technology of artificial intelligence that is different from traditional way of or acts of art creation.

This exhibition shows the collaborative creation on how AI interprets the poetic language of the artist’s inner thoughts named <Colors of Memory> and <Fragmented Poetry>, and creates suitable images accordingly, and at the same time is an experimental work on how AI, while providing a variety of convenience in our lives, performs and can be utilitized when its technology is applied to art creation. 

In <Colors of Memory> series, the artist first draws an abstract picture, then writes a poem to express in words his emotion towards it. On his preliminary drawing, using the memory saved by an AI image creation model, AI interprets the meaning of the poem the artist has written and creates a new image. It is the process of an artwork being created by the collaboration between the artist and the AI. This process is in line with how human beings currently regard AI, which leads to the questions of the future and coevolution that the mankind and AI shall create together. 

<Fragmented Poetry> is the process of the artist’s poetry made into images by the AI and adding color to them. This process is the process of making someone else’s memory into my own, and also is a ritual that revives lifeless memory into a living memory. The artist contemplates the relationship between numerous data and individuals, and embodies questions about them through various settings on relationship in the collaborative work process with the AI. This comes back to the fundamental question of whether the owner of personal data, which is one’s memory, is indeed oneself. 

This exhibition showcases the latest works of Je Baak, an artist who pioneers new areas in contemporary art, and is themed on the questions about the subjectivity of creation and  direction of future art through integration of AI and art creation, which have recently been emerged as a hot topic. 

Artist Je Baak graduated from College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University and received MA in Royal College of Art(RCA) in London, UK. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in Seoul and London, and participated in Saatchi Gallery’s Korean Eye, SeMA Media City Biennale, and Arts Electronica, establishing himself as a media artist. He has won awards such as the Grand Prize in Joong Ang Fine Arts Prize in 2010, and the Grand Prix in VH Award in 2016. He is currently a Professor at Seoul National University.
