Japanese Pop Trio II

Gallery 508은 일본 동시대 회화의 새로운 흐름을 소개하는 기획전 <Japanese Pop Trio II>를 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 서로 다른 세대와 시각적 언어를 지닌 일본 작가 츠즈키 마유미(Mayumi Tsuzuki), 시카타 하루나(Haruna Shikata), 유타카 시모무라(Yutaka Shimomura)가 참여한다.

<Japanese Pop Trio II>는 오늘날 일본의 시각문화 속에서 이미지와 기억이 어떻게 만들어지고, 축적되며, 다시 변형되는가에 주목한다. 세 작가는 회화를 중심으로 작업하지만, 각자가 바라보는 이미지의 출발점과 이를 다루는 방식은 서로 다르다.

츠즈키 마유미는 고도성장기 도쿄 교외에서 성장하며 경험한 기억과 당시 일본 사회에 스며들었던 미국 문화에 대한 동경을 ‘American Nostalgia’라는 독특한 풍경으로 풀어낸다. 평온하고 아름답게 보이는 화면에는 현실과 환상, 익숙함과 낯섦이 교차하며, 기억 속에 남겨진 설명하기 어려운 불안과 감정의 흔적이 함께 자리한다.

시카타 하루나는 기억과 감정, 개인의 경험을 끊임없이 새롭게 바라보는 ‘Overwrite(덮어쓰기)’의 개념에서 출발한다. 사진과 문자, 드로잉 등의 이미지를 편집하고 변형한 뒤 디지털 프린팅과 회화적 제스처를 중첩하며, 과거의 기억 위에 현재의 경험과 감정이 다시 쓰이는 과정을 시각화한다.

유타카 시모무라는 스마트폰과 소셜미디어를 통해 이미지가 끊임없이 복제되고 소비되는 동시대의 환경에 주목한다. 반복되는 캐릭터와 디지털 이미지의 구조를 회화로 옮기고, 때로는 완성된 화면을 직접 긁어내는 물리적 행위를 통해 스크린 속 이미지와 현실, 가상과 물질 사이의 관계를 탐구한다.

서로 다른 세대에 속한 세 작가의 작업은 각자의 시대를 둘러싼 이미지와 개인의 경험이 어떻게 회화로 전환되는지를 보여준다. 과거에 대한 기억과 향수, 개인의 경험에 대한 재해석, 그리고 디지털 시대의 이미지와 욕망으로 이어지는 세 개의 시선은 서로 다른 지점에서 출발하지만 하나의 전시 안에서 교차한다.

<Japanese Pop Trio II>는 이를 통해 오늘날 일본 동시대 회화가 ‘팝’이라는 익숙한 시각적 언어를 어떻게 각자의 경험과 시대적 감각으로 확장하고 있는지를 살펴본다.

Gallery 508 presents Japanese Pop Trio II, an exhibition bringing together three Japanese artists from different generations, each with a distinct visual language: Mayumi Tsuzuki, Haruna Shikata, and Yutaka Shimomura.

The exhibition explores how images and memories are formed, accumulated, and transformed within today’s visual culture. While all three artists work primarily through painting, their points of departure and approaches to the image differ.

Mayumi Tsuzuki draws upon memories of growing up in suburban Tokyo during Japan’s period of rapid economic growth, translating her fascination with the American culture of the time into a distinctive landscape of “American Nostalgia.” Familiar yet ambiguous landscapes and figures intersect across her canvases, blurring the boundary between memory and imagination.

Haruna Shikata’s work begins with the concept of “Overwrite,” continuously revisiting memory, emotion, and personal experience. She transforms images drawn from photographs, text, and drawings, combining digital printing with painterly gestures to create new layers of perception.

Yutaka Shimomura explores the contemporary environment in which images are endlessly reproduced and consumed through smartphones and social media. Building up layers through screen printing and physically scraping into the surface, he examines the relationship between digital images and the physical world, reality and imagination.

From landscapes rooted in memory to images encountered on digital screens, the works of these three artists reveal how personal experience and the visual culture of different generations are transformed through painting.

Through these distinct perspectives, Japanese Pop Trio II considers how contemporary Japanese painting expands the familiar visual language of “pop” through personal experience and the sensibilities of different generations.
