Mark Brusse

Mark Brusse is a Dutch-born sculptor, painter, and installation artist who played a pivotal role in the French Nouveau Réalisme movement of the 1960s. His practice explores themes of ephemerality, cultural fusion, and material transformation.

After studying at the Arnhem Academy of Fine Arts, Brusse moved to Paris, where he launched his career with object-based works. He participated in the 2nd Paris Biennale under the influence of art critic Pierre Restany, and later collaborated with the Fluxus group and avant-garde composer John Cage.

Inspired by Asian culture, he spent time in Japan and Korea, including a six-month residency in Seoul for the 1988 Olympic Park sculpture project. His works have been acquired by major institutions, including the Guerlain Foundation and the Centre Pompidou.

마크 브뤼스는 일시성과 이벤트성에 주목하는 작업을 통해 1960년대 프랑스 누보 레알리즘 운동의 핵심 작가로 자리매김한 예술가이다. 1937년 네덜란드 알크마르에서 태어나 아른험 미술학교를 졸업한 후, 파리로 건너가 나무 오브제 작업을 시작으로 본격적인 활동을 펼쳤다.

누보 레알리즘 이론가 피에르 레스타니의 주도로 제2회 파리 비엔날레에 참여했으며, 이후 미국과 멕시코를 거치며 플럭서스 그룹, 전위음악가 존 케이지와의 협업 등 다양한 예술 실험을 전개했다.

1970년대에는 버려진 오브제를 활용한 앗상블라주 작업에 집중했고, 1980년대 이후에는 회화를 통해 감성적인 색채와 평면성의 조형미를 탐구했다. 동양 문화에 대한 깊은 애정으로 일본과 한국에 머물렀으며, 1988년 서울 올림픽 공원 대형 조형물 설치를 위해 6개월간 서울에 체류하기도 했다.

그의 작품은 프랑스 겔랑 재단에 의해 대거 수집되어 파리 퐁피두센터 국립미술관에 기증되며 국제적인 주목을 받았다.
